Chestertown is a village, in the town of Chester, in northern Warren County. There are a lot of lakes nearby: Friends, Loon, Brant Lake plus the Hudson and the Schroon River. The town has two public beaches and boat launches. Also, at the crossing of NY 8 over the Hudson River in Riparius, there is the rebuilt railroad station complex that serves the Upper Hudson RR, as well as a nice park along the river by the rebuilt bridge. Loon Lake town beach is quite nice. There are a lot of small hotels and cabin places, as well as restaurants to serve any tastes. The village center is quite nice and reminds me of New England a bit. To the east of the Northway is the Town of Horicon, which is even smaller and has lots of small venues along the Schroon River like campgrounds and bed and breakfasts. East of Horicon and the river is Brant Lake, which is a long, skinny lake along the NY Route 5. |
History
Chstertown is one of the oldest towns in the Adirondacks, incorporated in 1799. Like a lot of upstate NY towns, it was settled by land hungry New Englanders looking for streams to establish mills and harvest timber. At the turn of the 20th century, with increased wealth and improved rail service, it became a popular tourist destination. But it is not all tourist based, it still has some local industries like a large gravel quarrry and lumber mill. |
