Schroon Lake is a great little lakeside community with good swimming and fantastic scenery. It is a friendly place with a large variety of lodgings, restaurants and other services and boasts a small supermarket too, which is the last one for about 50 miles. Schroon Lake has a nice beach-lakeside park that is well tended. With the hills west of the Northway and east of the lake, it is in its own beautiful little valley. While the summer is the main season, it is open all year round and even boast a town golf course, free beach, boat launch and picnic area. The beach's sand area might be small, but the park surrounding it is first class. Schroon Falls, 4 miles north of the town center on US 9, is a great hangout. There is a good swimming and tubing spot there, plus state land. Schroon Falls Farm, a garden center there, has some fantastic gardens there to see. Schroon Lake is fed by the Schroon River and the southern end of it is in Warren County at Pottersville; where it reverts back into the Schroon River until it meets the Hudson River in Warrensburg. The Northway also follows the river places from south of Exit 30 to just south of Exit 24.

One word of caution: In the winter, the Northway by Schroon Lake, north of Exit 27 where it overlooks the lake, is prone to black ice. Be careful in this part!
